Increasingly, sophisticated autonomous vehicles (AVs) use computers both for guidance purposes and for the collection and processing of data, including information whose collection and dissemination is controlled by generally applicable (or “legacy”) privacy and data security law.
In our recent Bloomberg Law article, “Adapting the Law to Autonomous Vehicles,” we discuss the interaction between AVs and existing regulation—such as by the Federal Trade Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—and we consider some of the initiatives that industry and government bodies are exploring to fill in gaps presented by the novel combination of technologies and capabilities of autonomous vehicles.
